Abstract: One of architect Mickey Muennig's whimsical home designs in Big Sur, California, is ready for a new owner.

The curved, four-bedroom, four-bathroom home has had only two owners since it was completed in 1982.

It is listed for $6,950,000 with Ben Heinrich of Coldwell Banker Real Estate.

California architecture buffs may know Muennig for his design work at Post Ranch Inn, a luxury coastal resort in Big Sur.

He has also designed many residences in the area.

Big Sur is located on the Central Coast, about 150 miles south of San Francisco, along the Pacific Ocean.

The resort town of Carmel is a 45-minute drive to the north.

Munig, who died in 2021, was an advocate of organic architecture, designing homes that complemented their natural surroundings.

In 2000 and 2002, Architectural Digest named him one of the top 100 architects in the United States.

"His homes are as unique as the man himself," Heinrich says." He was influenced in large part by Frank Lloyd Wright and was one of the first to think in terms of organic architecture. When he came to Big Sur, he said the land spoke to him."

The 3,000-square-foot Casa Luna sits on a five-acre lot in a waterfront community on Pfeiffer Ridge.

"It's all curved. There aren't a lot of straight lines in Mickey's house," Heinrich says.

The home spans three levels and features indoor-outdoor living with adjoining patios and decks.

On the top floor, the living room has a fireplace and a wall of windows.

From the dining area, you can walk out to the garden.

The seller bought the house in 1998 for $675,000 and has since updated the kitchen and bathrooms.

Heinrich notes that in designing the house, the architect "would literally go out and camp out on the property and see how the sun came up and how the lines hit. He was an absolute lover of nature."

This is evidenced in the layout.

"Almost every room in the house," he says, "has a private patio." Wherever you are in the house, you have a view. You have wonderful mountain and ocean views. The light is always changing and everything goes in the direction of the light."

There is a separate building that would make an ideal art studio, and plans for a guesthouse are included in the sale.

A possible buyer for this house is already in California.

"Seventy percent of the buyers in the Big Sur area are from Northern California," says Heinrich, "and a significant number are in the high-tech industry. They may have started a company or are running a company. Big Sur is a way to get away from that pressure."

Another Muennig design is also on the market, a glass-walled home built in 2004 on 109 acres.

It is currently the most expensive listing in Big Sur.
